Strengthening Our Faith in Action (SOFIA)
issues of social concern around basic human needs through advocacy, information sharing and encouraging volunteerism.
Beginning with the Saturday Warming Shelter in the fall of 2011, SOFIA has spent much of its energy partnering with the Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter to provide support for our neighbors in need. Other non-profit connections include Renewing the Energy in Maine (REM), the Family Violence Project (FVP) and the Evening Sandwich Program (ESP).
SOFIA also works to educate the congregation and church members about local, non-profit organizations and their need for volunteers.
Due in part to the work of SOFIA, the church received the Northern New England Anne Kempers Award for Social Justice in 2012.
For more information about SOFIA contact Marian Flaherty.
SOFIA is a congregational committee that works to improve life for those who struggle with lack of financial, social, health, spiritual and other opportunities.
We act as the liaison between our church and the local and extended communities. We address
First Sunday Donations
On the first Sunday of each month, we give our non-pledge, in-church offering to a local, non-profit organization or the Minister’s Discretionary Fund.
The Second Sunday Souper Wagon
This “souper” little red wagon appears at the beginning of the service to collect ready-to-eat donations of peanut butter, jelly, canned soups and other supplies for the Evening Sandwich Program.
Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter
On the third Friday of the month, a SOFIA team leads volunteers in preparing dinner for the guests at the shelter.
Waterville Main Street Harvest Fair
Committee members sell cider and donuts to raise money for committeework and increase awareness of the UU Church of Waterville’s role in the community.
Annual Donations Drive
Once a year, SOFIA requests items from church members for various groups in need. School supplies for local children, personal care products for the homeless shelter, and emergency bags for the FVP are some of our past projects.
SOFIA gives a holiday dinner to a family in need, along with gifts and a little shopping money.
